Jarrell David Harris has been given a 13-year prison sentence in D.C. for the murder of Sedrick Miller, which occurred in front of Miller’s children.

An arrest warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court allowed members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force to apprehend David Harris on May 6, 2022. According to the prosecution, Harris shot Miller eleven times.

According to the investigation, on March 4th, Sedrick Miller was walking down the street accompanied by his 5-year-old child and a 6-month-old baby in a car seat. Suddenly, a man approached them from behind and fired several shots, taking Miller’s life in front of his kids.

Miller was found dead and appeared to have gunshot wounds when the police arrived. As soon as possible, he was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where he was later declared dead by law enforcement.

When Sedrick Miller was shot and killed in 2022, Jarell Harris pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. On January 25, 2023, in Northeast Washington, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison after entering a guilty plea.

In a plea deal, Harris acknowledged that he confronted the victim in the 2300 block of 18th Street NE and then shot him nearly a dozen times. Miller and his kids were present when the attack took place. The autopsy revealed that Miller had received eleven gunshot wounds, including five to the thorax, four to the face and neck, one to each upper right and left limb, and five to the face.

A little more than two months after fleeing in a car and turning into a wanted man, Harris was finally captured on one count of willing armed manslaughter. According to D.C. Police Cmdr. William Fitzgerald, Miller’s murder was one of the awful things they’ve had here in the Fifth District.

Miller’s tragic death has deeply affected the community where it occurred. Lauraline Gregory, a resident, stated to Fox 5 D.C., “We are in a place now where there is no regard, no respect for life.” The fact that the murder occurred in front of two young children, who may experience long-term trauma, highlights the urgent need for action to protect future generations.

Before Murdering Miller, Harris Had A Lengthy Criminal Record

According to court documents, Harris had a substantial criminal past prior to killing Miller. His criminal record included convictions for assault, robbery, and illegal possession of a handgun in Prince George’s County, Maryland, as well as in Washington, D.C.

Not to mention that, in his plea agreement, he expressed regret for his actions and a desire to spare Miller’s kids the anxiety of a trial. There were other tragic outcomes of the defendant’s actions in this case, in addition to Sedrick Miller’s death, which had a significant impact on his family.

The Metropolitan Police Department investigators’ efforts were lauded by U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Contee in announcing the sentence.

The victim/witness advocates Jennifer Clark and Latrice Washington-Williams who worked on the case at the U.S. Attorney’s Office were also thanked for their efforts. They also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Prava Palacharla, who investigated the case and oversaw the prosecution.
